The name itself may deter some from using this remedy: “radio-active,” yet that’s how this appliance was named and described in the readings. The device has no connection whatsoever with radioactivity, which became a household word after the 1945 detonation of the first atomic bombs. Possibly in some way it is comparable to a radio wave because of a vibrational current between it and the user. The Edgar Cayce Foundation suggested the name Impedance Device. Today it is known as the Radiac® and is sold through A.R.E.’s official worldwide supplier, Baar Products, Inc.
What does it do? According to the readings, the Radiac effects a change in the body’s electrical energy by utilizing the body’s own current. It looks like a battery, but contains no electrical energy of its own, though it does emit a subtle force often detected by sensitive individuals. The two terminals on the top of the appliance are each connected by a wire to an electrode or disc that is attached to the body. “Its design,” according to Harvey Grady’s article “A Gift on the Doorstep,” “creates a capacitor which theoretically modulates the current flowing from one part of the body to another.” This equalizing effect was mentioned in several [Edgar Cayce] readings, one of which stated:
“The Radio-Active Appliance is good for anyone, and especially for those that tire or need an equalizing of the circulation; which is necessary for anyone that uses the brain a great deal-or that is unactive on the feet as much as is sufficient to keep the proper circulation.” (826-3)
Another person asked how long it should be used and received this reply:
“Oh, from thirty minutes to all evening! This doesn’t matter so much-the time-under such conditions; but this would be good for anyone, see? especially to rest tired business men, overtaxed ladies-there are a few! and such conditions as go to make up for the physical exertions of the body, where taxation mentally, or taxation physically. These would be the greater aids. This is Number One.” (1800-16)
Using the Appliance
A four-sided figure shaped slightly like a pyramid, this device was mentioned in over 800 Edgar Cayce documents. An instruction booklet for its care, use, and storage is included with each purchase. The Radiac can be used as is (plain) or with a solution jar attached. Primarily it was recommended to improve circulation or to normalize the functioning of the nervous system, most often as a preventative rather than a curative measure.
Until one gets used to the procedure, it may seem daunting at first to hook it up, with its discs, wires, and loop straps. But within a short time, the task should become “second nature.” The appliance is placed in the sun for about an hour between uses (cloudy days are OK) in order to hold the vibrations that over time build up within it. Twenty minutes before you hook up to it, put the device into aplastic, glass, or ceramic (nonmetal) container (about a gallon-size) and fill the basin with ice up to the red strip one-and-a-half inches from the top of the appliance, then add water to the same level. The ice and cold water help to “electronize” the device. While it’s resting in this tub, you may clean the surfaces of the electrode discs by polishing them with a cloth, then sanding them lightly withemery paper. This removes the film built up from the body’s vibrations and prevents short-circuiting. After twenty minutes, connect the red (positive) wire to the red jack on the appliance. Connect the black (negative) wire to the black jack, making sure that the discs do not touch each other. Then attach the red disc to your body, next the black disc (always starting with the positive).
These electrodes are placed directly on the skin, attached with Velcro to maintain a firm contact, but not too tight to inhibit circulation. With each application they are rotated sequentially over the pulse points on the ankle (inner, big toe side) and wrist (thumb side of hand). In using a solution jar, the placement is slightly different, and it’s best to follow a specific reading in choosing the positions for the discs. Length of time was about thirty minutes, at least in the beginning. While connected to the device, maintain a relaxed, meditative state, pray, or listen to soothing, inspirational music. At the end of the time period, when disconnecting, reverse the order, removing first the black (negative) attachment from your body, then the red (positive). Then remove the black wire from the appliance, followed by the red wire.
It is important to rest and relax for about thirty minutes after use, avoiding any excessive physical or mental activity, in order to allow the good effects to continue. Then, keeping the black and red wires separated, clean and polish the discs as before, and store them separately. The device is removed from the ice container, placed in the sun, and then stored away from any metal objects. The solution jar, if used, is taken care of at this time. After completing the four-day sequence, you can leave it off for four days to a week, then resume the cycle again.

Benefits of the Appliance
Bringing a better balance to one’s body seems to be the main function of this rather mysterious, plain-looking device. A pilot study, the first scientific double-blind experiment to determine what happens to people using the appliance, was launched in 1987 by the Fetzer Energy Medicine Research Institute. Analysis of its results indicated in the experimental group a possible significant increase in the level of serum dopamine as compared to the control group. Dopamine, a neurotransmitter, is involved in fine motor function and circulation. An increase would be associated with relaxation, which may be related to greater coordination, reducing stress and normalizing blood circulation. Though further study is needed, this pilot study suggests that the device may perform as the readings state.
Several cautions are worth noting:
• This is beneficial to anyone, properly used! It is harmful, improperly used.
• You can’t use the Radio-Active Appliance and be a good ‘cusser’ or ‘swearer’ – neither can you use it and be a good hater. For it will work as a boomerang to the whole of the nervous system if used in conjunction with such an attitude.” (1844-2)
• If your body is actually building the charge that will be disseminated by the appliance throughout your body, it would be important to be mindful of what you are creating. For this reason also you should be the sole user of your device.
• It is not to be used on the same day you are taking alcoholic beverages. It is not to be stored in the refrigerator or on or near metal.
Relieving nervousness, promoting rest and sleep, normalizing weight, improving vision and hearing, and creating a better metabolism-these are all benefits promised in individuals’ readings for those who choose to avail themselves of this unique and specialized instrument.
