Soothing Skin Relief
Ichthammol Ointment is an advanced drawing and anti-itch salve for external use. Recommended for application to plant irritations such as nettles or poison ivy, treating insect bites and stings from mosquitoes, spider and bees, and drawing splinters and slivers. It provides soothing relief for ingrown toenails and minor skin irritations. Edgar Cayce recommended it for skin tenderness or breaking of tissue, abrasions and as the “best application for bed sores.”
Ichthyol is a particular variety of the substance called Ichthammol, an ointment made by chemical breakdown and treatment of certain types of asphaltic rocks. Considered an antiseptic ointment for skin diseases, Cayce prescribed it about twenty-five times, particularly for bedsores and scleroderma and also in cases of eczema, dermatitis, pruritus, and infections.1
Below are readings in which Cayce prescribed Ichthammol:2
(Q) What is best treatment for a bed sore? (I ask this for my patient.)
(A) This depends upon the body and upon the general conditions. The best application as a general condition for such is the use of Ichthyol Ointment.
(Q) Should the masseuse work on the right foot at present?
(A) The only changes we would give from that being applied would be to use the Ichthyol Ointment on the right limb; that is, the foot, the ankle, the areas where there has been the tenderness by the breaking of those areas that become sore. The masseuse may assist this in its full drainages, but begin upon the edges of the breaks with an ointment prepared from the Ichthyol the Ichthyol Ointment. Do not spread it over the whole area, but to prevent spreading of the area where there is the oozing of the pus or corruption. Use this consistently, not a great deal but consistently, and it will aid.
(Q) Can anything be done to prevent the bed sores?
(A) These naturally may come, if there is not too much deterioration – use Ichthyol Ointment, as well as the rubs indicated. These will make life or circulation and thus prevent deterioration.
(Q) How can his left ear, nose and whole head be healed?
(A) This should be cleansed first with an alkaline antiseptic, … Then apply Ichthyol Ointment, and we will begin the proper healing – when the system is also cleansed.
(Q) Give treatment for scratches and itching…
(A) Use that of the ointments as has been given for same. The Ichthyol, or Ichthyolate, OINTMENT will be well to use here.
Below are reports of Cayce directing the use of Ichthammol:2
Over those areas where the ointment is needed, we find that the Ichthyol Ointment is well. While this tends to irritate, it does cleanse. Hence this we would keep.
After such places become cleansed, or start healing, it would be well to use the Cuticura Ointment.
Also we find that the places should be kept cleansed with Cuticura Soap.
Keep up the application of the Ichthyol ointment for the abrasions. We would keep a gauze, and then an oil gauze over this …
On those places, as on parts of the rump, use the Ichthyol [Icthyol] ointment
Keep up the rest of the treatments. If there is broken tissue, apply a lotion or an ointment made of Ichthyol, or Ichthyol Ointment.
For the bed sores, and the broken tissue, the application of Ichthyol Ointment will be the more beneficial to the body, if there are the opportunities from the other applications for this to prove of a beneficial effect to the body.
