It’s been more than a decade since I’ve written about my experience using the wet cell battery for muscular dystrophy in Venture Inward (Jan/Feb 2000). At the time of the article, I had been using the battery daily for about six months and I was in heaven.
In only six months, my death sentence had been reversed. My eyes could open without drooping. I could breathe deeply again, recall dreams, walk more than a short distance without getting winded, and swallow without choking. Life was good. Other than some rules to follow, there are few restrictions placed on using the wet cell. Yes, it’s true you can’t drink if you use the battery, and I didn’t drink.
An occasional headache would tell me when I needed an adjustment for a spinal misalignment that interfered with the energy flow of the battery. But there was one warning that really threw me for a loop–do not use the battery when you’re angry, or even if you were angry recently! I had had an argument with my husband an hour or so earlier and then went to use the battery. I didn’t think I was upset anymore, but within minutes of applying the discs to my body, I thought I’d jump out of my skin. I felt awful and irritated all over and had to immediately remove the wires before calming down.
You can’t use the radio-active appliance [or wet cell battery] and be a good “cusser” or “swearer”–neither can you use it and be a good hater. For it will work as a boomerang to the whole of the nervous system if used in conjunction with such an attitude. (1844-2)
Attitude is very important when working with the wet cell. Cayce stressed this in a reading for a 27-year-old woman with muscular dystrophy:
Do the first things first. Do not begin the use of the Wet Cell Appliance until the body is sure within itself that it has understood the spiritual attitude in that way not only to be assumed but to be applied in the daily life. Then begin, and we will bring better conditions for the body. (4014-1)
Besides recommending the wet cell battery for muscular dystrophy, the Cayce readings often suggested it for multiple sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, paralysis, among other neuromuscular disorders–not that there were many determined souls who applied what they had been told to do in their readings. (See theVenture Inward page at EdgarCayce.org/members for a few examples of people who did follow through.) And so I wrote and shared my story.
My hope was that it would encourage others with the same or similar condition to try the Cayce remedies or to at least begin to open their minds to the possibility of a different outcome than what their well-meaning doctors might have told them about their condition and prognosis. There are no remissions with muscular dystrophy, as there are with multiple sclerosis, so I knew to give credit for my improvement where it was due–the Cayce remedies.
Attitude is very important. Do not
use an appliance when you are
angry, for example.
To understand what someone faces who plans to use the wet cell battery, it’s helpful to look at the challenges involved. There were more than 900 readings given by Cayce on the battery–its construction and its application. Depending on the person receiving a reading, Cayce would individualize his recommendations to their needs. Not everyone with multiple sclerosis, for example, was told to do the same thing.
Since Cayce is not here to help, some people deciding to use the battery nowadays will follow the recommendations in a reading that seems most appropriate for them; having the same ailment, age and/or gender in common. Others will follow the most frequently suggested protocol. Still others will use trial and error or, ideally, tune into their own inner guidance. With a diagnosis of Lou Gehrig’s disease, deciding which reading to follow is not difficult–there’s only one. However with multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease the variations could make your head spin.
Ten people were given readings on muscular dystrophy. I chose to follow one that alternated , silver, and iodine solutions for 30 minutes each day. Why? Because it was for a woman in her 50s, close to my age. And, for me, it worked very well–until I became impatient.
It didn’t help that my husband questioned the time and cost involved in maintaining the battery, and wondered if it would do any good. (The cost today, after the initial purchase of the battery, would run about $72 each month for the three solutions I used and the willow charcoal battery kit.) But there was also the time and cost of Cayce’s recommended spinal massage, which was just as important as the wet cell for the remedies to work. I couldn’t say I was cured in 1997 (or now), but I was about 70 percent better than when I began.
Regardless of the wonderful progress I had made, I was still impatient. Looking back I don’t know what I was thinking. All was going well.
But then I started thinking, “if 30 minutes are good, more would be better” and continued alternating the 3 solutions as before but now for 45 minutes at each session.
I had previously noticed a different kind of reaction to the two percent silver solution I used with the battery. The gold solution was very calming, as was the camphor (which I had experimented with at times). The iodine solution was tolerable although I wouldn’t say calming. But with the silver solution I felt “on alert,” or as if I was dealing with something strong. Not long after beginning the 45-minute sessions I began to notice a slight discomfort in the area where the larger 3-inch nickel disc is generally placed–the upper right abdominal quadrant or close to the duodenum–on the days I used the silver solution. But that didn’t stop me or make me pause. Isn’t it true that “there’s no gain without pain?” However, when the discomfort turned to real pain, I finally stopped. There was no denying something was wrong.
I had a dream then, a simple one. There was an electrical fire in my closet. I woke up and knew what I had done. I had irritated my nervous system (my electrical system) with the overuse of the battery. Though the battery only generates a very small current that most people can’t feel (less than a flashlight battery), when I used it incorrectly the consequences for me were severe.
The intense pain in my abdomen wouldn’t stop. And even though I wasn’t using the wet cell battery any longer, the pain continued and didn’t let up. It even started to radiate down to my tailbone, with panic attacks, which I had never dealt with before, thrown in for good measure. I was having a firsthand experience of messing with the “abdominal brain” (meridianinstitute.com/abbrain.htm) and its effect on my wellbeing.
Twice I went to the emergency room but to no avail. Nothing showed up on any of the usual tests. I kept thinking if I could just wait it out, it would pass–but it didn’t. Even my trusty castor oil packs did no good.
Eventually, with the help of the right medication to ease my abdominal spasms, I could go through a day without thinking of wanting to die for a reprieve from the ordeal I was going through.
Recovery was slow but I was getting better. I spent a lot of time outside on a blanket under a tree, watching the clouds go by and listening to the sounds of nature. All in all it took a year for me to feel normal again, free of pain and anxiety. It made sense that as soon as the abdominal pain eased so did the panic attacks, because of the abdominal brain connection.
I was surprised and pleased that even without using the battery or being able to eat well for more than a year, I hadn’t lost ground as far as the symptoms caused by muscular dystrophy. However, I hoped with time I could go back to the device that had given me back my life (though this was never to be).
Months passed and I would try to “feel” for guidance — asking within, “Is it time yet to begin again?” I could feel my somewhat tempered impatience still beneath the surface, but that wasn’t guidance. What I did feel would be helpful was to return to the radio-active appliance I had used years ago. It was relaxing and my dream recall was much better with it. Cayce emphatically stated it was “good for anyone.”
Q. What can I do to revitalize my nervous system? A. Use that reionizer, the Radio-Active Appliance, as has been given. This revitalizes the system throughout! For it coordinates impulses… (1472-2)
Typically when using the radio-active appliance, the ends of the red and black wires have a 1-inch disc that is made of German silver. They are placed on opposite pulse points at the wrists and ankles, and rotate around the body through the course of four 1-hour sessions. The time spent using the radio-active appliance, like the wet cell, is meant to be a special time for spiritual attunement.Compared to the wet cell battery, the radio-active appliance (also called Radiac) generates no energy of its own but picks up and rebalances yours. Because of this, it is never shared with another person. Quite an amazing device.
On one occasion I had asked Jeanette Thomas, former administrator for the Edgar Cayce Foundation, how does someone know if the appliance is working? She explained that if it puts you to sleep within a short time, it’s working. I found that to be true. Even when I wasn’t tired, within 15 minutes of applying it, I’d be dozing. Then again, a warm castor oil pack did the same thing to me.
And so I began regularly using the radio-active appliance, and castor oil packs. Each was something I could do for myself that felt gentle and healing. However, after reading about someone using the appliance for multiple sclerosis with a solution jar (in essence turning the appliance into a mini wet cell battery — but without the “kick”) I was drawn to do the same. I used a 1-inch nickel-colored disc attached to the solution jar and rotated the two discs on my opposite extremities–as with the typical plain set-up.
That’s what I’ve been using for the last 10 years–the appliance with gold and my trusty castor oil packs. It’s caused me no problems, and no pain. If anything it’s maintained what I gained in the first six months of using the wet cell that many years ago. Cayce even went so far as to say that if given properly, with the appliance, “silver and gold may almost lengthen life to its double, of its present endurance.” (120-5)
Working in the A.R.E. Library and speaking with people facing challenges similar to mine, has been a blessing to me. I’ve been able to offer hope and share from experience the unlimited potential of these remarkable appliances–when used with respect.
Patience has been a big lesson of mine, and that learning slowly does not mean sloth. The real need is for persistency and consistency when using Cayce’s holistic remedies and always listening for inner guidance–however it comes.
In patience in self, in patience with thy fellow man, in patience with thy service may ye indeed find and know thy soul. (1205-1)
For there’s no such thing that if an application can’t help, it can’t hurt! Because if it is helpful, mis-applied it must be harmful — this is natural! (1179-4)
